Liaoxi (遼西) was a commandery of You Province in the north-east, in what is now western Liaoning and adjacent Hebei. Gongsun Zan was from Liaoxi. He rose to become a major warlord, known for his White Horse cavalry, and contended with Yuan Shao until his defeat and death at the Battle of Yijing.
