Wuzhang Plains (五丈原 wǔ zhàng yuán) was the site of Zhuge Liang’s death in 234 during his fifth and final Northern Expedition. Located in present-day Shaanxi Province, the plains became a stalemate battleground where Zhuge Liang’s Shu forces faced Sima Yi’s Wei army. After months of standoff, Zhuge Liang died of illness, and the Shu army withdrew. The location became a symbol of Zhuge Liang’s unfulfilled dream of restoring the Han.
Historical significance
Battle sites and geographical features played crucial roles in Three Kingdoms military campaigns. Mountains provided defensive positions, rivers served as transportation routes and natural barriers, and plains became battlegrounds for decisive engagements. Many of these locations became legendary through the Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
