Wuzhang Plains 五丈原

Plains south of the Wei River where Zhuge Liang died during the Northern Expeditions.

The Wuzhang Plains (五丈原, Wuzhangyuan) were open fields south of the Wei River in the Guanzhong region. In 234 they became the camp site of Zhuge Liang’s final Northern Expedition against Cao Wei.

Zhuge Liang’s death there marked the end of Shu Han’s major northern campaigns. Later writers treated Wuzhang Plains as a symbol of both his perseverance and the limits of Shu’s strength.
