The Battle of Jieting (街亭之战) was fought in 228 during Zhuge Liang’s first Northern Expedition. Ma Su was given command of the vital pass at Jieting but deployed on high ground against Zhuge Liang’s advice. Zhang He’s Wei army cut off his water supply and defeated him. Wang Ping rallied part of the force and retreated in good order, but the pass was lost.
Consequences
Without Jieting, Zhuge Liang’s supply line was severed and his advance could not be sustained. He withdrew. Ma Su was executed for the defeat—a decision Zhuge Liang reportedly regretted. The battle became a cautionary tale about ignoring sound tactical advice and the importance of holding key terrain. Wang Ping’s conduct was noted and he was promoted; he later played a major role at the Battle of Xing Shi and in Shu’s defence.
