The Battle of White Wolf Mountain (白狼山之战) was fought in 207 when Cao Cao marched north against the Wuhuan (乌桓), who had sheltered Yuan Shao’s sons Yuan Xi and Yuan Shang. Cao Cao’s army crossed difficult terrain and met the Wuhuan at White Wolf Mountain (白狼山). The enemy was numerous; Zhang Liao urged an immediate attack and was given command of the vanguard. He led the assault; the Wuhuan were defeated and their leader Tadun was killed. Yuan Xi and Yuan Shang fled to Gongsun Kang, who later had them killed. The battle secured the north for Cao Cao and is a highlight of Zhang Liao’s military career.
