In 190, during the campaign against Dong Zhuo, Sun Jian defeated Dong Zhuo's forces at Yangren. It was the coalition's only significant victory; Sun Jian faced Lü Bu and Hua Xiong.

The Battle of Yangren (阳人之战) was fought in 190 during the Campaign against Dong Zhuo. Sun Jian led the coalition forces that advanced against Dong Zhuo. At Yangren (阳人), Sun Jian defeated Dong Zhuo’s army; his opponents included Lü Bu and Hua Xiong. The battle was the coalition’s only significant victory—other warlords such as Yuan Shao and Cao Cao had been reluctant to commit. Sun Jian’s aggressive tactics and personal courage earned him the epithet “Fierce Tiger of Jiangdong”. After the defeat, Dong Zhuo burned Luoyang and moved the court to Chang’an.
