Cao Kai (simplified: 曹凯, traditional: 曹凱, pinyin: Cáo Kǎi) was the second son of Cao Ren, one of Cao Wei’s most distinguished generals and a cousin of Cao Cao. He was enfeoffed as a marquis under Cao Wei. Few details of his career are recorded; his elder brother Cao Tai succeeded to their father’s main title and military command.

Family background
Cao Kai was born into one of the most powerful families in Cao Wei. His father, Cao Ren, was a cousin of Cao Cao and one of the most trusted and capable military commanders of the Wei state. Cao Ren served as General-in-Chief (大將軍) and was enfeoffed as Marquis of Chen (陳侯). He died in 223 and was posthumously honoured as Marquis Zhong (忠侯), meaning “Loyal Marquis.”
Cao Ren had at least three sons:
- Cao Tai (曹泰), the eldest son, who inherited his father’s marquisate and served as General Who Garrisons the East (鎮東將軍). He held the office of Prefect of the Masters of Writing (尚書) and was later appointed General of Agile Cavalry (驃騎將軍) with authority to oversee military affairs in the regions of Jing and Yu. Cao Tai was enfeoffed as Marquis of Ningling (寧陵侯).
- Cao Kai (曹凱), the second son, enfeoffed as a marquis.
- Cao Fan (曹範), the third son, also enfeoffed as a marquis.
Career
The surviving sources provide virtually no detail on Cao Kai’s life beyond his status as Cao Ren’s second son and his enfeoffment as a marquis. Unlike his elder brother Cao Tai, who held significant military commands and civil offices, Cao Kai does not appear to have played any prominent role in the political or military affairs of Cao Wei.
In the system of hereditary enfeoffment that Cao Wei maintained, it was typical for the eldest son to inherit the main title and command while younger sons received lesser marquises. Cao Kai’s enfeoffment as a marquis was part of this system, reflecting his father’s status and the regime’s policy of rewarding the families of its most distinguished generals.
Historical sources
Cao Kai is mentioned briefly in the Records of the Three Kingdoms (SGZ), in the biography of his father Cao Ren (volume 9, Book of Wei). The entry records only his status as Cao Ren’s second son and his enfeoffment as a marquis. No independent biography exists for him.
