Chen Biao (simplified: 陈表, traditional: 陳表, pinyin: Chén Biǎo), courtesy name Wenxing (文興 Wénxīng), was a general of Eastern Wu and the son of Chen Wu. He served as a companion to the heir Sun Deng together with Zhuge Ke, Gu Tan, and Zhang Xiu. When Chen Wu died, Chen Biao succeeded to his father’s troops. He was known for his conduct and died young in 237. His son Chen Xiu inherited his marquisate.


Biography

Companion to Sun Deng

Chen Biao was from Lujiang and was the son of Chen Wu, who had served Sun Ce and Sun Quan. Chen Biao was selected with Zhuge Ke, Gu Tan, and Zhang Xiu to serve as companions to Sun Deng. He took part in the heir’s education and court activities.

Succession to Chen Wu’s troops and death

When Chen Wu died in battle (at Hefei in 215 or later), Chen Biao was given his father’s troops. He held a military post (Colonel of the Winged Forest or equivalent) and was enfeoffed. He died in 237; his son Chen Xiu succeeded to the marquisate.


Legacy

Chen Biao is remembered as one of the companions to Sun Deng and as the son who succeeded to Chen Wu’s command.
