Fancheng 樊城

City on the Han River in northern Jing Province; besieged by Guan Yu in 219; Pang De was executed there.

Fancheng (樊城) was a city on the north bank of the Han River in northern Jing Province, opposite Xiangyang, in what is now the Xiangyang (Fancheng) area of Hubei. Together with Xiangyang it guarded the route from the north into the Jing region and the middle Yangtze.

In 219 Guan Yu led a major offensive and besieged Fancheng. Cao Ren held the city; Pang De, who had been sent to reinforce him, was captured when floods overwhelmed his camp and was executed at Fancheng after refusing to surrender. Before Guan Yu could take the city, Lu Meng attacked and seized Jiangling, cutting off Guan Yu’s retreat. Guan Yu was captured and executed by Sun Quan. The siege is known as the Battle of Fancheng.
