Hefei (合肥) was a city in Yang Province on the Huai River in what is now Hefei, Anhui. It sat on a key route between the Jiangnan region and the North China Plain and was strategically vital for both Cao Wei and Eastern Wu.
Wei held Hefei as a forward base. Sun Quan attacked it multiple times. In 215, Zhang Liao led a famous defence at the Battle of Hefei (215) and repelled a much larger Wu force; Chen Wu was killed during the fighting. Hefei remained in Wei hands and continued to be a focus of Wei–Wu conflict.
