The Battle of Hefei in 215 (合肥之战) occurred when Sun Quan led a large Wu army to besiege Hefei (合肥). Cao Cao had left Zhang Liao, Li Dian, and Yue Jin with a small garrison and instructions for the defence. Zhang Liao led a picked force in a dawn sortie that broke into Sun Quan’s camp and caused heavy casualties. Wu regrouped and besieged the city; Zhang Liao and Li Dian held Xiaoyao Ford. In the final engagement Sun Quan was nearly captured; he crossed the ford with difficulty and withdrew. Hefei remained a Wei stronghold. The battle is a central episode in Zhang Liao’s biography.
