The General of the Rear (后将军 hòu jiāngjūn) commanded rearguard forces. In Shu Han, Huang Zhong held this title after Liu Bei declared himself King of Hanzhong in 219. The position carried significant prestige as one of the four directional generals.
Historical context
The four directional generals (前后左右将军) were among the most important military positions in the Han dynasty. During the Three Kingdoms period, these titles were used by all three kingdoms to designate their senior military commanders.
