Jing Province (荊州) was the large province covering the middle Yangtze basin, roughly modern Hubei and Hunan. It was one of the most populous and strategically important regions of the late Han.
Liu Biao governed Jing Province for nearly two decades. After his death in 208 his younger son Liu Cong briefly succeeded and surrendered Jing to Cao Cao, forcing Liu Bei and Liu Qi south. The province then became the main theatre for the Battle of Red Cliffs, the Sun–Liu territorial dispute, and later campaigns over Jiangling, Jiangxia, and the southern commanderies.
