Longxi (隴西) was a commandery of Liang Province in the north-west, in what is now the Longxi–Lintao area of Gansu. Ma Chao was from Lintao (臨洮) in Longxi. He succeeded his father Ma Teng in the region, fought Cao Cao at Tong Pass, and later joined Liu Bei and became one of the Five Tiger Generals of Shu Han.
