The Phoenix Feather Cape (鹤氅 hè chǎng) was a ceremonial garment made from crane feathers, worn by scholars and strategists. Zhuge Liang was famously depicted wearing this cape, symbolising his role as a cultured strategist rather than a mere warrior. The garment represented refinement and intellectual authority.
Historical context
Horses were crucial military assets during the Three Kingdoms period. Famous steeds became legendary alongside their riders, and the bond between warrior and horse was celebrated in literature and art. Armor and clothing also carried symbolic significance, distinguishing rank and role.
