Wuchang (武昌) stood on the middle Yangtze and became one of the major strategic cities of Eastern Wu. It linked the western river front with the lower Yangtze heartland.
In military terms, Wuchang was important for controlling river communications and supporting fleets, especially during prolonged rivalry with Cao Wei.
