Empress Jing’ai (simplified: 张皇后, traditional: 張皇后, pinyin: Zhāng Huánghòu), posthumously Empress Jing’ai (敬哀皇后, Jìng’āi Huánghòu), was the first empress of Liu Shan (Emperor Xiaoling) of Shu Han. She was the daughter of Zhang Fei and Lady Xiahou.
Biography
The future Empress Jing’ai was born as the daughter of Zhang Fei, one of the founding generals of Shu Han, and Lady Xiahou, who was Zhang Fei’s wife and niece of Xiahou Yuan.
In 221 CE, when Liu Shan was designated as crown prince, she was selected as his crown princess. When Liu Shan ascended the throne in 223 CE, she was elevated to empress.
She died around 237 CE and was given the posthumous title Empress Jing’ai (敬哀皇后). Her younger sister later became Liu Shan’s second empress, known as Empress Zhang (张皇后).
