Empress Wu (simplified: 吳皇后, traditional: 吳皇后, pinyin: Wú Huánghòu), posthumously Empress Mu (穆皇后), was Liu Bei’s principal wife and his only formal empress. She was from Chenliu and had first been married to Liu Mao, Liu Yan’s son; after Liu Mao’s death she remained in Yi Province. When Liu Bei took Yi Province (214), his general Wu Yi (her brother) and others urged him to marry her. Liu Bei initially hesitated because she had been the wife of a fellow clansman, but he did so. When Liu Bei became Prince of Hanzhong (219), she was made his queen consort. She survived him and Liu Shan honoured her as empress dowager. She died in 245 and was given the posthumous title Empress Mu.
