Liu Mao (simplified: 劉瑁, traditional: 劉瑁, pinyin: Liú Mào) was Liu Yan’s third son. Unlike his brothers Liu Fan and Liu Dan, who remained at the capital, Liu Mao accompanied Liu Yan to Yi Province and served as Major of Separate Command (別部司馬). Liu Yan had him marry the younger sister of Wu Yi (吳懿) of Chenliu, whom a physiognomist said had the appearance of great nobility. Liu Mao died young. After Liu Bei took Yi Province from Liu Zhang (214), Liu Bei married Liu Mao’s widow Lady Wu; she became his wife and was later posthumously honoured as Empress Mu (穆皇后). The marriage was encouraged by Fa Zheng and others to consolidate ties with the Yi Province gentry.
