Liu Fan (simplified: 劉範, traditional: 劉範, pinyin: Liú Fàn) was Liu Yan’s eldest son. He and his brothers Liu Dan (劉誕) and Liu Zhang remained at the capital with Emperor Xian while Liu Yan governed Yi Province. When Dong Zhuo controlled the court, he imprisoned Liu Fan and his brothers. Later, Liu Fan plotted with Ma Teng to attack Li Jue (李傕) at Chang’an and restore the emperor’s authority. The plot was exposed; Liu Fan fled to Ma Teng’s camp and asked Liu Yan to send troops. Liu Yan sent Sun Zhao with 5,000 men. Liu Fan was killed at Changpingguan (長平觀)—some sources say he fled to Huaili (槐里) and was killed when the city fell. His death is recorded in the same year (194) as the great fire at Mianzhu that destroyed Liu Yan’s carriages and prompted the move of the provincial seat to Chengdu. (Li Jue 李傕 controlled Chang’an at the time.)
