Lady Xiahou (simplified: 夏侯氏, traditional: 夏侯氏, pinyin: Xiàhóu Shì) was Xiahou Yuan’s niece. In 200 she was gathering firewood in Qiao County when Zhang Fei captured her. Learning she was from a good family, he took her as his wife. She bore Zhang Bao, Zhang Shao, and two daughters who became Liu Shan’s empresses (Empress Zhang (Jing’ai) and Empress Zhang). In 219, after Xiahou Yuan was killed at the Battle of Dingjunshan, she asked that his remains be buried properly; Liu Bei agreed. When her cousin Xiahou Ba defected to Shu in 249, Liu Shan treated him well in part because of his kinship to Lady Xiahou and the empress.
