Lady Huang (simplified: 黃夫人, traditional: 黃夫人, pinyin: Huáng Fūrén) was Zhuge Liang’s wife. Her personal name was not recorded in historical sources; the name Huang Yueying (黃月英) appears in later tradition and the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. She was the daughter of Huang Chengyan (黃承彥), a scholar in Jing Province. According to the Xiangyang Records, Huang Chengyan told Zhuge Liang that he had an ugly daughter whose talent matched his; Zhuge Liang accepted and married her. She bore Zhuge Zhan, who died defending against Wei. Folklore credits her with intelligence and learning and with aiding Zhuge Liang’s inventions (such as the wooden ox and flowing horse), though these details are not in the main historical record.
