Wang Yun (simplified: 王允, traditional: 王允, pinyin: Wáng Yǔn), courtesy name Zishi (子师 Zǐshī), was a Han minister who, with Lü Bu, organised the assassination of Dong Zhuo at Chang’an in 192. After Dong Zhuo’s death Wang Yun took charge of the court as Minister over the Masses, but he refused to pardon Dong Zhuo’s former officers Li Jue and Guo Si. They marched on Chang’an, drove out Lü Bu, and killed Wang Yun and others, ending the brief restoration of Han authority in the capital.

Biography

Early career and opposition to Dong Zhuo

Wang Yun was from Taiyuan and served the Han in various posts. When Dong Zhuo seized power in 189 and moved the court to Chang’an, Wang Yun remained in office and secretly sought to remove Dong Zhuo. He won over Lü Bu, who had become Dong Zhuo’s adopted son but resented Dong Zhuo’s cruelty. The two agreed to strike when the emperor was receiving officials and Dong Zhuo was unprotected.

Assassination of Dong Zhuo

On 22 May 192, at the Northern Side Gate of the palace, Lü Bu killed Dong Zhuo. Wang Yun and the court declared Dong Zhuo a traitor. Wang Yun was made Minister over the Masses and took control of the government. He initially refused to grant amnesty to Dong Zhuo’s former generals Li Jue and Guo Si, who had withdrawn to Liang Province. Advisers urged him to pardon them to avoid a new rebellion; Wang Yun hesitated and then refused.

Fall and death

Li Jue and Guo Si raised troops and marched on Chang’an. Lü Bu could not hold the city and fled. The rebels captured Emperor Xian and killed Wang Yun and many of his associates. The emperor remained a pawn of successive warlords, and the Han never regained real power in the capital. Wang Yun’s daughter (or foster daughter) is traditionally identified with Diao Chan in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, where she is used to turn Lü Bu against Dong Zhuo—though the historical plot did not depend on her.

Legacy

Wang Yun is remembered for the coup that removed Dong Zhuo and for the political misjudgement that led to his own death and the return of chaos to Chang’an. The assassination is a pivotal moment in the Campaign against Dong Zhuo and the collapse of Han authority.
