Zhang Zun (simplified: 張遵, traditional: 張遵, pinyin: Zhāng Zūn) was the son of Zhang Bao and grandson of Zhang Fei, one of the founding generals of Shu Han. He served as Master of Writing (尚書) in the Shu Han government and was killed in battle in 263 CE during the Wei conquest of Shu.
Biography
Zhang Zun was born into the Zhang family, one of the most prestigious military families in Shu Han. His father Zhang Bao was the son of Zhang Fei, though Zhang Bao died young before inheriting their family’s marquisate. Zhang Zun’s aunt was Empress Jing’ai (敬哀皇后), who married Liu Shan, the second emperor of Shu Han.
Zhang Zun rose to the position of Master of Writing (尚書), a senior civil office in the Shu Han administration. When the Wei general Deng Ai launched his surprise invasion of Shu in 263 CE, Zhang Zun was among the officials who accompanied Zhuge Zhan (son of Zhuge Liang) to intercept the Wei forces at Mianzhu (綿竹).
In the Battle of Mianzhu, both Zhuge Zhan and Zhang Zun were killed in action. Zhang Zun died defending the Shu Han state, continuing his family’s tradition of military service. His death marked the end of the Zhang family’s direct line, as the Zhang Fei lineage had produced three generations of loyal service to Shu Han.
