Jiaozhou (交州) was a province in the far south of the Han empire, covering what is now Guangdong, Guangxi and northern Vietnam. Shi Xie governed it for decades, maintaining order and paying nominal allegiance to the central government and later to Sun Quan. Zhang Xiu, who later fought Cao Cao at Wancheng, was from Jiaozhou. Gu Cheng was exiled to Jiaozhou in the 240s after falling foul of the Wu court.
