Pang Degong (simplified: 庞德公, traditional: 龐德公, pinyin: Páng Dégōng) was a renowned scholar and recluse in Xiangyang during the late Eastern Han. He lived by farming and study and was known for recognising talent. He gave Zhuge Liang the epithet ‘Crouching Dragon’ (臥龍), Pang Tong ‘Young Phoenix’ (鳳雛), and Sima Hui ‘Water Mirror’ (水鏡). He was close to Sima Hui, Xu Shu, and Zhuge Liang. Liu Biao, Governor of Jing Province, repeatedly invited him to take office; Pang Degong declined, preferring a reclusive life. He later retired to Lumen Mountain (鹿門山) and lived there as a hermit until his death. His recognition of Pang Tong and Zhuge Liang helped establish their reputations as the ‘Crouching Dragon and Young Phoenix.‘
