Qu County (朐縣) lay in Donghai Commandery, Xu Province, on the coast in what is now the Lianyungang area of Jiangsu. Mi Zhu was born there. He and his brother Mi Fang were wealthy merchants who backed Liu Bei with funds and troops when he fled from Cao Cao, and their support was crucial to Liu Bei’s survival and rise.
