Pengcheng (彭城) was a major city and commandery seat in Xu Province, corresponding to modern Xuzhou in Jiangsu. It lay on important routes between the Huai basin and the north China plain and was long a regional centre.
The Zhang clan of Eastern Wu came from Pengcheng. Zhang Zhao, one of Sun Quan’s most senior advisers, and his sons Zhang Cheng and Zhang Xiu were all from Pengcheng, and their learning and counsel shaped the early Wu regime.
