Sima Fang (simplified: 司馬防, traditional: 司馬防, pinyin: Sīmǎ Fáng), courtesy name Jiangong (建公), was an Eastern Han official and the father of Sima Yi. He lived in Wen County, Henei Commandery, and held several important posts: Prefect of Luoyang (洛陽令), Intendant of the Capital Region (京兆尹 Jingzhao), and Cavalry Commandant (騎都尉). He was known for his solemn character, strict discipline with his sons, and scholarship—reportedly able to recite over 100,000 lines from the Book of Han. His eight sons (including Sima Lang, Sima Yi, and Sima Fu) were collectively known as the “Eight Das” (八達) because their courtesy names all contained the character da (達). In 242 he was posthumously honoured as Marquis Cheng of Wuyang (舞陽成侯) in recognition of Sima Yi’s service to Wei. Through Sima Yi, Sima Fang became an ancestor of the Jin dynasty ruling house.
