Guan Suo (simplified: 关索, traditional: 關索, pinyin: Guān Suǒ) is a fictional character in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms (三国演义), portrayed as the third son of Guan Yu. He does not appear in the historical Records of the Three Kingdoms (三国志) or other historical sources.
Biography
In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Guan Suo is introduced as a wandering warrior who joins Zhuge Liang’s Northern Expeditions. He is said to have been raised in hiding after the fall of Jing Province and seeks to avenge his father’s death by serving Shu Han.
His story is entirely a literary invention, created to expand the Guan family’s role in the narrative and provide additional heroic figures for the Shu Han cause.
