Empress Bu (simplified: 步練師, traditional: 步練師, pinyin: Bù Liànshī), personal name Lianshi (練師), was Sun Quan’s favoured concubine. She was from Huaiyin in Linhuai and was a relative of Bu Zhi. She became Sun Quan’s concubine around 212 after he had left Lady Xu behind. She bore Sun Luban and Sun Luyu and was known for not being jealous; she even recommended other women to Sun Quan. When Sun Quan declared himself emperor (229), he wished to make her empress, but his ministers supported Lady Xu (adoptive mother of Crown Prince Sun Deng). Sun Quan left the empress position vacant for over a decade. Lady Bu died in 238 and was posthumously honoured as empress (November 238). She was buried at Purple Mountain (Nanjing).
