Xiahou Shang (simplified: 夏侯尚, traditional: 夏侯尚, pinyin: Xiàhóu Shàng), courtesy name Boren (伯仁), was Xiahou Yuan’s nephew (從子) and a close friend of Cao Pi. He served under Cao Cao and Cao Pi in civil and military roles. After Cao Pi became emperor (220), Xiahou Shang was made General Who Conquers the South (征南將軍) and Governor of Jing Province (荊州刺史). He participated in the defence of Jiangling and in operations around Fancheng; Xu Huang’s biography records that under Cao Pi, Xu Huang and Xiahou Shang took Shangyong from Liu Feng. Xiahou Shang favoured a concubine over his wife (a Cao princess); Cao Pi had the concubine killed, and Xiahou Shang was said to have grieved so deeply that he fell ill and died in 225. His son Xiahou Xuan (夏侯玄) became a leading Wei official and was killed in the Gaoping Tombs Coup (249). His daughter Xiahou Hui married Sima Shi.
