Xiahou Xuan (simplified: 夏侯玄, traditional: 夏侯玄, pinyin: Xiàhóu Xuán), courtesy name Taichu (太初), was Xiahou Shang’s son and a leading Cao Wei official. He was renowned as one of the “Four Intelligent Men” (四聰) of his era and was an early figure in Wei–Jin xuanxue (metaphysical philosophy). Under Cao Shuang he rose to Regular Mounted Attendant and Central Protector of the Army, and later served as General Who Conquers the West (征西將軍) and Minister over the Masses (司空). He was a friend of Guanqiu Jian and Zhuge Dan. After Sima Yi’s Gaoping Tombs Coup (249), Xiahou Ba defected to Shu fearing for his life; Xiahou Xuan was summoned to court. In 254 Cao Fang, with Li Feng and Zhang Ji, plotted to remove Sima Shi and make Xiahou Xuan Grand General. The plot was discovered; Sima Shi deposed Cao Fang and had Xiahou Xuan, Li Feng, and Zhang Ji executed at the Eastern Market. Xiahou Xuan’s family were also punished. He faced death with composure. His execution was a catalyst for Guanqiu Jian’s rebellion.
