Chen Yi (traditional: 陳禕, simplified: 陈祎, pinyin: Chén Yī, dates unknown) was Inspector of Yang Province (揚州刺史) during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He is known primarily from a single episode recorded in the biography of Xu Jing in the Records of the Three Kingdoms (SGZ), which describes how Xu Jing came to serve under him after fleeing from the service of the late Kong Zhou (孔冑).
Context
During the collapse of central authority in the late Eastern Han, provincial governors and inspectors became increasingly important figures, as the imperial court in Luoyang lost its ability to govern effectively. Yang Province (揚州) covered a large area in the lower Yangtze region, including parts of modern Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, and Fujian. It was a frontier region with a significant non-Han population and was of growing strategic importance.
Connection to Xu Jing
The primary source for Chen Yi’s life is the biography of Xu Jing (許靖) in the Records of the Three Kingdoms. According to this account:
Xu Jing had been serving under Kong Zhou (孔冑), the Inspector of Yu Province (豫州). When Kong Zhou died, Xu Jing was left without a patron. He fled to Yang Province, where Chen Yi was serving as Inspector. Xu Jing entered Chen Yi’s service.
When Chen Yi died, Xu Jing was again left without a patron. At this point, Xu Gong (許貢), the Commandant of Wu Commandery (吳郡都尉), and Wang Lang, the Administrator of Kuaiji (會稽太守) — both of whom had long been friends with Xu Jing — took him in and protected him.
This episode illustrates the fluid nature of patronage and service during the late Han. Officials moved from one patron to another as circumstances changed, and personal relationships (friendship, former collegiality) often determined where a displaced official would find refuge.
Death
The sources record that Chen Yi died in office as Inspector of Yang Province, but they do not provide the date or cause of death. Based on the timeline of Xu Jing’s movements, Chen Yi’s death probably occurred in the mid-190s (c. 194–196), during the chaotic period following Dong Zhuo’s assassination and the fragmentation of central authority.
After Chen Yi’s death, the position of Inspector of Yang Province passed through several hands as the region became a battleground between rival warlords. Eventually, Sun Ce would conquer much of Yang Province and establish the foundation for Eastern Wu.
Historical note
It is important to distinguish this Chen Yi (陳禕) from other figures of the same name in the Three Kingdoms period. In particular, there was a Chen Yi (陳禕, same characters) who served as an official of Shu Han under Liu Shan and was a contemporary of Jiang Wei. The two figures are not related and should not be confused.
